Building rail hub Ljubljana
Service period:
2008
–
2010
Project client:
Republic of Slovenia, Ministry for Transport
Project volume:
€ 1,200,000,000
Project description
The Republic of Slovenia is particularly important in terms of transit transport, due to its position within Europe.
On the one hand, two important pan European railway corridors run through Slovenia, but on the other hand the connection of the Mediterranean port of Koper is of strategic importance.
The network requires modernisation for an urgently required increase in performance, while at the same time reducing the negative effects of the transport routes on people and the environment.
Furthermore, existing platforms in the city region should be used for a future city railway concept, in the sense of the “Karlsruhe model”.
The investigated variants are based on the approach, to lay more or less the majority of the railway hub underground. Therefore, up to 40km of tunnels must be built on two levels, inner-city.
The central train station Ljubljana should be overbuilt with a shopping and entertainment centre, and the track systems should be laid underground.
