Project description
In the course of the expert report, the options for reactivation of the local public rail transport on the Ratingen Western line, were to be investigated.
This meant that the current technical and legal constraints and framework conditions had to be identified.
The Ratingen Western line is an important North-South axis for freight transport, and part of the trans-European network from Rotterdam – Genoa.
It takes the majority of the freight transport between the Netherlands and/or West Germany, and South Germany, Italy, Austria and Switzerland.
The route is already almost at the limit of its capacities today, and a further increase in freight transport should be expected in the next few years.
