Project description
The European route E 233 is part of the Trans-European transport network (TEN) and the shortest connection between the port and economic centres of Rotterdam and Bremen/Hamburg.
It runs from Zwolle in the Netherlands, across the German/Dutch border in a west to east direction, intersects with the federal highway BAB 31 at the Meppen junction, and leads to federal highway 1, Cloppenburg junction.
The route has a high percentage of heavy goods vehicles, and has therefore been expanded into the federal motorway 37 on the Dutch side in the last few years, and then over four lanes as the B 402 up to the federal motorway 31.
The districts of Cloppenburg and Emsland and the ring of cities Zwolle-Emsland have made an agreement with the state of Lower Saxony, to bring the 84-km-long route between the federal motorway 31 and the federal motorway 1, promoted by Interreg, to planning approval readiness.
For this reason, eight planning phases were formed with lengths between 6.4 and 14.5 km, of which five are in the district of Cloppenburg.
