Project description
The Guttenbach lock is one of 27 locks, which were built in the 1930s, with the development of the Neckar into a shipping channel.
The right chamber of the lock was put into operation in 1959. After more than 50 years, the building material and technology are showing signs of wear.
The Waterways and Shipping Office Heidelberg, and the Office for Neckar Development Heidelberg, planned a construction period of 2 years, for the repair of the right chamber.
In the scope of the building measure, the lock gates were exchanged, the outer concrete shell of the chamber was replaced, and the whole drive, electrical and control technology was renewed.
All works took place during ongoing shipping transport in the neighbouring lock chamber.
With the completion of repairs to the right chamber, the Guttenbach lock guarantees safe shipping transport during the construction of the future extension, planned for the left lock chamber.
