Project description
To open up the central train station to short distance public transport, an additional North - South suburban railway connection between Nordring and Potsdamer Platz is planned: the S21.
The first step towards this is the Western and Eastern Nordring connection to the central train station.
The unintersected crossing of the Berlin Nordring makes two tunnels (tunnel West connection approx. 410 m and tunnel East connection approx. 210 m) necessary, for the exit of the S21 from the Nordring, and a further tunnel (approx. 610 m) for the continuation to the central train station (underground) at the end of the route. These tunnels near to the surface will be built in open construction, and partially in cut-and-cover construction.
The unintersected merging of the East and West route branches also requires a 630 m long bridge section, and a connecting ramp.
In the area of the route merging, the retrofitting of the optional suburban railway station ”Perleberger Straße” with a platform per route branch had been considered in the planning.
